Evaluation

I didn't try to do anything different from the professional magazines because I tried to make my magazine look as professional as possible so I stuck to the techniques of well-known magazines in order to help me with my own magazine's professionalism. I copied lots of things, like not having alot of dead space, as evidenced by magazines like Kerrang! An example of this is shown on the right, as you can see it doesn’t have any dead space, they use the whole front cover to help them advertise their magazine more and persuade potential buyers to purchase the magazine. I also copied the way Kerrang! produce the lots of information on the front cover of their featured article, on the issue shown on the right they used ‘Avenged Sevenfold’ as their front cover. This band forms part of the largest and most important article of the month’s issue. I wanted to replicate this technique, that's why I used ‘Captain Oates’ on my front cover as they were part of the leading article of the issue. In addition I used a larger, clearer font in order to attract the reader more effectively and to easily inform them about the band involved. But I believe I could have given even more information about the band on the front cover to attract even more interest from readers. I maybe could have included a quote from the band themselves or a bit more information about why they are good, and worth reading about. With my sell lines I could have added page numbers and a contents page so it would be easier for people to locate information as they flicked through the magazine. Another thing that I could improve about the sell lines is that I could have put more pictures in to express and illustrate the writing more and that would make it easier to digest and explain the sell lines in contrast to having just writing. My use of vocabulary linked alot to my target audience, a high percentage of my readers were either at university or college so I used words that they would use in their usual everyday conversations so they can relate to the different articles being expressed to them. I used words/phrases like ‘blow your mind’, ‘cool’ and ‘apps’ instead of applications to attract my target audience more. Therefore, my magazine is very informal and is looked upon as being much cooler and this adds to the fact that my articles are about informing late teenagers on what sterotypically matters to them.

My articles link to my audience, I chose lots of my sell lines for my front cover based upon new technology like apps for you IPod and new headphones; ‘Headphones that will blow your mind’ plus ‘Xbox or PS3’ and also ‘Spice up your iPod with brand new apps’. I based a lot of my articles on the fact that in my research lots of my audience loved to be up to date with new technology and I expressed this in my mood board which is shown on the left showing that my typical reader loves iPods and gaming consoles

After my photo shoot, I cancelled down to three photos that I could chose from for my front cover, these three wereI couldn't come to a conclusion on my front cover photo so I thought that I would ask my focus group and the type of people that would buy my magazine to give their views. Lots of people thought picture 'A' was the best due to 'how dramatic it was' and 'it is very bright" meaning that it stands out from other competiton. People didn't like 'B' because it 'looks dull' and 'may imply that the magazine is boring.' My focus group did like 'C' as well though because they liked 'the tilt upwards from the camera' and the 'professionalism being made from the photoshoot.' My focus Group cancelled down the photos to 'A' and 'C' so I asked potential customers some primary, quantitive research questions about which one they thought was better and 'A' got 74% meaning that 'C' only got 26%. This made me realise that my opinion was not valid when choosing a front cover picture because I'm not buying it, it's the customers who should choose what they want to see, so I followed my audience research.

With my masthead I copied alot of conventions that Kerrang! use... As you can see on the right Kerrang!'s masthead looks very rundown and urban but very dramatic, they use a black background to contrast with the white font which makes it stand out more, they have used a font which makes the word looked scratched and aggresive which really links to the genre of music which is contained in the magazine. I tried to do the same dramatic effect with my masthead, I chose a contrasting background and used drop shadow to replicate the Kerrang! look of run down and worn out. It took me a long time to replicate the way Kerrang! produced it's masthead. I explored many websites that showed different fonts and I came to the conclusion that http://www.dafont.com/ had the best fonts for my magazine and decided upon 28 days later font http://www.dafont.com/search.phppsize=m&q=28+days+later because it was the best option to show the dramatic, run-down, forceful look which I was trying to achieve. My only real regret about my masthead is that I feel it is not dark enough, it doesn't contrast against the white background as much as I had hoped.

To get to know how to represent my models better I looked at a website based upon different tribes in the UK and what they were interested in and how they looked; http://www.uktribes.com/. After looking at this website I can come to the conclusion that my audience are urban trendies who wear brands like Adidas Original, Fred Perry and Paul Smith, it is good to know which brands they like so it is easier for businesses to know if they should be advertising in my magazine. They listen to music by artists such as Pharrell Williams and Kanye West the tribe is defined as 'The Indie Scenester still likes to be ahead of the game when it comes to discovering new music. They still can’t quite shake off the skinny jeans though.'

To know more about my audience and my focus group, look at the prezi below..

My audience are very smart and intelligent because they got As and Bs for their GCSEs and they are very laid back but they care about their looks and appearance and what music they listen to. So for my photoshoot I wanted my models to look laid back, implying that they don't care about how they look but they actually look smart and are very presentable, showing that they can look after themselves. I made my models look smart in my photoshoot (shown above) by dressing in a simialr style and all of them wearing hoodies and wearing skinny jeans. They had their hoods slightly up to show that their personalities are slightly mysterious and also to show their fringes which they compliment themselves on. My product represents my models as being obsessed with music, their worlds revolve around it, this is shown in my double page spread; 'We relate everything we do to our music, this makes us find new lyrics that at first we woudn't think about.'
I also wanted to show that this class of people were funny and outgoing; 'Our music is very feel good music that people like to dance to' and also when the article says ' We weren't that good really but people liked us!' I tried to make my article very upbeat and very positive just like the band members and this was a good way of representing the type of people they are.

To find out what kind of institutions might distrubute my product and to find out how my product matches with professional work watch the prezi below...

On my desktop I used InDesign and Photoshop to help me with my production, I found it hard to use at the beginning because I had never used them before but after watching the tutorial for both of them I improved my skills and this helped me produce more dramatic, more professional work.

I used blogger to help me record different information like reviewing different magazines, my audience research, my focus group, mood board, initial treatment and many more usages. I found it easy to use and navigate with, it is very similar to Word and I find Word easy to use anyway. I save my work in ‘my documents’ in a folder called 'Media' and also on my USB stick this helped me keep my work safe and secure. Saving my work was easy to do and by being more organised it helped me find and record my work in a more efficient way.

I used the camera shown for my photoshoot I found it hard to use at the begining due to the fact that the lighting was not very good for what I was trying to achieve. Photoshop helped me acheive the lighting effect I wanted. The picture shown on the right shows me using the assets.

For more evidence of the use of technology in my print prelim task look at the video i created below...

The section below shows my progression from my old rough copy front cover compared to my final product.

My first front cover (shown on the left) has lots of dead space and not many sell lines in contrast to my final copy, this makes it not look very professional and not as attractive for possible buyers. In addition my band name is not very catchy for my rough copy, 'Tiger in the Woods' is not as memorable as 'Captain Oates'. My heading 'QE music' is very dull and may imply that the magazine is not very interesting. I changed my masthead to 'Verified' because this means "correct, right, checked" and the sell lines express more to the readers about items in the publication that have interests appropriate to their needs. My rough copy is not very professional due to the fact that it doesn't have a barcode, doesn't have a slogan and doesn't have a date/issue number. I tried to add all of these assets to my final copy to make it look as authentic and unique as professional work. Looking at my rough copy I was impressed with my main picture, it is different and stands out from typical photoshoot pictures, another thing I was happy with was the way I linked to the colour red and black and not lots of different colours which may make my work look scruffy and disjointed. I thought my rough copy was a good template to start on because I could easily identify my faults from it, and it was easier to improve my work compared to if I created my final product or a product that I was fully satisfied with straight away.

The main reason for the progression in my skills is the tutorial both for Photoshop and Indesign. They helped me gain knowledge of the software and make my work look more effective. Without the turorials I would not have been able to make as many improvements and adjustments to the pictures. I woudn't have been able to place my writing on the final products as effectily either.

Skills Development - Photography Development

The photo above is a medium close- up, which is shoulders up wards it helps the audience see the expreesions on the face of the model and also will help them remember their face if they see them in the future. Another shot I could do aswell is a close - up which is just of the face or an extreme close- up which is just of the eyes, this will show the models face in even more detail.

Mid - Shot is waist upwards this gives the audience an indication to what the model is wearing and any movements of the arms, it is used alot of the time fgor front covers due to it is not as extreme as a close- up but still is easier to digest what the model is doing.

This full body shot helps the model express their feelings and stance more and also is usefull to show off what their wearing, espically in a clothes magazine. it is also a good shot for aband to be shown in a music magfazine because you can see the full band due to you are zooming out.

Skills Develpoment - Journalism Development

Dizzie Rascal - Dylan Kwabena Mills
Dizzee Rascal is a british rapper, song writer and record producer who is now one of Britains most sucsessful rap artists of all time. He was born in London in 1985 and had a very challenging child hood, his father died when he was 5 and he was raised for most of his life by his African-born mother. He attended a series of schools in East London, excluded from four Secondary schools in four years, it was a teacher who first called him "Rascal", where his stage name originated from. In his fifth school he found his love for music, he only attended his music lessons and his talent in music was found. Aged 16, his mum bought him his first decks which lead to him becoming an ametur DJ were he performed on private radio stations, with his new found love he produced his first hit I Luv U which entered the UK Top 30 singles. This took Dylan Kwabena Mills (29) to new heights, he won The Widewinder Award for Best Newcomer MC in 2002 this quickly followed to his first and best album, Boy in da Corner in 2003 this garage/hip hop genre was a huge hit with his ever building fan club with such huge succesful singles such as Fix Up Look Sharp and his first single I Luv U. The next 7 years for Dizzee Rascal have been a dream, three more albums; Showtime, Maths +English and Tongue 'n' Cheek leading to more awards and a larger fan base. Why is he so succesful then? The range of genres he covers from grime to electo - pop means that lots of different audiences are attracted by his music rather than staying with a niche audience which may lead to him not being as successful. His success has ment that was the sound of the british music scene in the noughties, due to his domination in album selling, singe selling and amazing live performances.

Flat Plans

Front Cover- I have choice to use three main colours for my front cover, double page and double page spread so it looks more professional and readers now what magazine they are reading due to they can realte to the colours chisen. I have called my magazine verified due to it is very catchy and sounds ver kool and up-date, what the readers are wanting. The main article is of the band that are pictured on the front cover the lead singer is in front of the over two band members because a lead soinger in a band stands out more from the other members. Sell lines are either side of the main front cover picture, i have done a tiny sentence after each sell line to give more information about poarts of the article. I have chose a white background so the black and red colours chose for the sell lines and mast head stand out better due to the contrast in colour. More important word are in larger fonts such as 'exclusive' so readers can see these are the more important topics/areas of the magazine.

Contents Page- Another main picture of the band in the featured article which shows the audience how big and interesting the interview is. Page numbers are done in a stand out colour so articles are easier to find for readers and persuades them more to read whats avaliable. 'Verified' is again placed in the top right hand corner, same as the front cover. Imformation about the magazine is really giving more information which is firstly stated on the front cover. In the bottom left hand corner, there is an advertisment for the magazine which is about subcription to the magazine, so hopefully will help sell more magazines. The large 'win' sign in the top left hand corner also persuades the reader to buy this magazine due to it shows a benefit of doing so.

Double Page Spread -The double page spread firstly shows what type of music listeners will be interesting in this band, Arctic Monkey fans, from my primary research a high percentage were big fans of Arctic Monkeys so this will persuade consumers to read the article due to they would like the genre of music. I have placed four pictures in my double page spread to make sure readers remember the band members faces so they canidentify them if they listen to their music after they have read the article. I have added 'The biggest sound of 2010' because my readers are interested at being up to date with new bands, so this will help them do so.

Recce of Location

Potential location- Photoshoot room.

Why a good loaction?
- Lighting is high and will look very effective for my front cover. I also woudn't have have to change the white screen behind the subjects. Access is hard due to need to get an early booking or else it may be full when i want to be able to use it. Room to do different photos due to lots of room.

Potential Location- Behind the arts centre

Why a good location? - Only avaliable in the daytime when it is bright, but the location looks very run-down which make sit look authentic an realistic. the fact that the location is very old and not up-to-date shows the genre of the bands music which was listened to alot of years ago, the location demonsates this

Potential Location-To the side of the arts college

Why a good location? - Outside so only can beused with good ligh, middle of the day. location is very dramatic and will represent a typical run down building area that needs refurbishing, the
steps also make it better due to photos can be made at different sizes easier beacuse of more room to position band members.

Photoshoot plans.

My main cover photo is going to be in the photoshoot area with high lighting with a white background so it is not dull and makes the main models and sell lines stand out from the plain background. I am going to tilt the camera down on the three band members slightly so the camera has a higher eye, the band members are going to be in a triangular shape with the main singer at the front with the drummer and the bass player on his shoulder either side.

I want to use stairs at the back of the college so band members can be put on different levels and I can use the bush and wall at either side of the location to help me with the depth of field of my camera angles, and also be good assests for more effective photography. I will be using natural day light. The limitation with this position is that i can only change the angle to the left the wall blocks me from going right.

The old windows for the background of my photoshoot plan is very effective but the dull colours of them are a positiove for they won't be to dominat compared to the main subject. A good location because i have lots of room to postion my camera, either side, left or right. Natural lighting and natural bushes to relate to the typical theme of my photo shoot.

Paragraph Plans
For my double page spread i am going to create short paragraphs which are short and snappy, ones to keep the readers interest on the band being interviewed. I will start a new paragraph on average at the end of every question the band answer, this will keep a good shape to my article and will be easier to reader for the audience.

Institutional Context

Bauer Media is a multinational conglomerate and would be the type of institution that would produce and distribute my product. This is becuase it is both vertically and horizontally integrated, owning a variety of subsidary companies across a bed of cross media platforms such as magazine, radio and mobile telephones

see the link below for a more in depth look at the extensive portfolio that Bauer Media holds

http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/Brands

"Bauer Media is a division of the Bauer Publishing Group, Europe’s largest privately owned publishing Group. The Bauer Publishing Group is a worldwide media empire offering over 230 magazines in 15 countries, as well as online, TV and radio stations......Bauer Media is a multi-platform UK-based media Group consisting of many companies collected around two main divisions – Magazines and Radio - widely recognised and rewarded as being industry innovators. " (taken from the bauer media website, about us (28/1/2010)

Being a multinational company means that there would be a large budget available to produce my magazine, ensuring that the production values and asthetic quality of my product would be of a high standard. Bauer Media also has lots of experience in the magazine market sector so will help my magazine succeed in sales beacuse of the companies expertise and recognisable brand name.

Furthermore, my magazine would maintain it's high asthetic standards as the circulation figures show that it would potentially generate a substantial revenue. Below is information about the ABC Circulation Figures (taken from the website)

FILM & MUSIC BRANDS
The world’s biggest-selling film magazine EMPIRE celebrates its 20th anniversary year with a sixth consecutive ABC rise to 194,016.
Earlier this year the EMPIRE team, led by Editor Mark Dinning, relocated to LA to work with the world's most famous film director and guest-editor Steven Spielberg. The special issue included exclusives from a veritable Hollywood Who's-Who - Jack Nicholson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson amongst them. Q continues to be the UK’s biggest selling music monthly with a circulation of 100,172. Its unrivalled access has allowed it into Bruce Springsteen's inner sanctum, Noel Gallagher's family secrets and U2's make-up box for world-beating exclusives has not only driven newsstand sales of the magazine, but provided complimentary content for Q’s digital offering - qthemusic.com, Q TV and Q Radio.
MOJO is the second highest selling music monthly after stable-mate Q at 97, 722. From Fleet Foxes to The Who to Nick Drake, MOJO remains dedicated to getting to the heart and soul of music - whether its new, cult or classic. KERRANG! remains the UK’s best-selling music weekly at 43,253. Changes in market conditions and music consumption have affected sales, but Kerrang! remains committed to serving its passionate rock readership with a weekly dose of news, features and reviews of the weeks hottest, gigs, albums and new music.
Stuart Williams, MD of EMPIRE, Q, MOJO and Kerrang!, commented:
“It’s been a huge year for the EMPIRE team, and it was the most extraordinary experience to work with the greatest ever movie director to create the greatest ever issue of EMPIRE in its 20 years.
Q, MOJO and Kerrang! all have strength in breadth and depth in being complete 360 brands. Each continues to lead and define the music market by connecting all manner of music fans with their music heroes via groundbreaking editorial access and content.”

The stages of production that my magzaine would go through and the subsequent job roles associated with these are;

Photography- Photographers take different photos in differnent areas of the chosen subject for the magazine and decide out of the photos taken which would fit best in different areas in differenet articles. They would use photoshop to make pictures look more effective and fit in better with articles.

Advertising Department- These select areas in the magazine that should contain advertising from companies that will realte to the type of readers of the magazine, they will also choose the price of advertising in different areas in the magazine. There would usually be a higher price for an area with advertising that gets alot of audience views.

Editor- Checks the different articles to help with the choice of words and the set-up of the magazine to help with the final out come of the mgazine, they edit magazines to make the readers more attracted to the articles.

Print Companies- After magazines have been checked they are taken to a print company who porduce the final copy of the magazine which are logistically taken to shops to sell to the consumer.

With very little help, a small budget and lack of facilities i will have to manage all these postions above by myself to make my magazine succeed in the production process.

Propsal and initial treatment

My target audience are teenagers who are fans of indie music and don't like to be main stream, who have an interest in new technology and like to be up to date on styles and music. The porpose of my magazine is to inform readers on new bands, latest clothes. The most unique thing about my magazine is that it is an all in one information magazine which informs the typical reader of the magazine which will interest them. and new technology so after readeing the magazine the feel up to date with the world. I believe that my conents page, front cover and double page spread should all have the same colour because this makes the magazine look more professionak and looks neater. The masthead on the front cover should not be covered by the main photo due to it will make the masthead stand out more and will attract the reader to the information clearer. Sell lines will be placed either side of the main photo on the front. One main photo on the front cover which will be of the band in the main article, the clothes they wear should link to the styles of the reader vso they can realte to the band. From my research i have come to the conclusion that i should have four photos on the double page spread due to my target audience agreed that this was the best amount. The contents should be set in three rows due to it is easier to digest the contents than in a big list. The larger the picture in the contents the more important the article. The band i should chose for the main article in the magazine should be of an indie genre due to the audience prefer this music compared to other genres in the survey. I also feel my contents page should contain pictures that relted to the articles that are identified in the contents page. I also feel that in my contents page, numbers for different articles should be stood out in a colour that contrasts with the background so is easier to find information for 'Flickers through' of the magazine. I have also have come to the conclusion that a question and answer seshion for my double page spread should not occur due to readers of the magazine are not attracted by this mostly besause the questions are to specific, readers want to now more than just answers of a couple of words. The length of my double page spread should be rather long beacuse my audience are very sufisticated and have high literacy skills. The band in the double page spread should give the reader a quick fact file to introduce the act being interviewed. Also at the end of the double page spread should give the reader more information on how they can hear and see more about the band, like up-coming gigs and where you can purchase their music from.

Conclusion to my research

Secondary research showed me that i can do an in-depth amount of primary research that really helped me understand what the type of information readers are looking for. My secondary research also gave me an idea what big companies like NME and kerrang! do to be successful.
In my primary research i found out what the group of people i interviewed want and how i am going to present my magazaine to satisfy their needs, i can now adapt my choice of volcabulary aswell due to i know their occupation and what type of words this class of people want to hear.

Reader Profile - Mood Board

I created this reader profile, because it shows that i understand my audience well due to i know what they like and what they are interested in doing. i copied the idea of a reader profile from my NME magazine secondary research.

Focus Group

Talking to six of my focus group, i found that in my music magazine people want to "read things that just dont link to music, like sport and general news" they also like to see "A large picture on the front cover of the band that are part of the main article in the magazine." Also they would like to see "a masthead that stands out so easier to see and stands out from other information." Many of them also agreed that "colours in the magazine should stay the same throughout because it makes it look more professional and neater." Just like in my primary research, the focus group mostly said that four pictures is enough for a double page spread

Primary research

I gave the questionarries below to the public to help me decide on the possible audiences interests and what they would like to see in the magazine. This will help me create a better magazine because i can now relate my magazine to the readers interests and the types of things that will make them decide to buy the magazine. Companies who are also willing to advertise in the magazine are more persuaded to do so due to their potential customers are targeted because they know the customers of the magazine.

Age:
Gender:
Occupation:
Favourite genre of music:Favourite band:
How do you comsume music?
How much do you spend on music a week:
Do you play an instrument?
Favourite clothes brand?
Favourite drink?
Where do you shop most?
What’s your favourite piece of technology?
What colours would you want to see in a magazine? How many pictures would you want to see in a double page spread?
Would you want the same colours all through the magazine?
Would you want advertisements featured in the contents page?
In an interview would you want a interesting answer in a larger font?
From my recordings 75% are possible male readers and the main age is 17, so a young audience. 50% of the public i did the survey on played an instrument which means i can chose different articles which involve instruments and one which dont, either way there will still be an audince for the instrument-related article. Also, i have seen that my audience are mostly interested in indie pop/ rock, they like artists such as the Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks and The Courteeners which shows that i can write my double page spread on an indie band that will interest the audience due to they enjoy listening to this type of music. For possible advertisers the audience likes Ipods, Xboxes, laptops, coke and many more different interests that mostly realte to streotypical urban trendie/ indie group of teenagers. I also learnt from my recordings about how the magazine should be present, the audience want to see an average of four pictures on a double page spread and also like to see a corraltion of colours through out the magazine

Audience Research - Secondary

I had a look at NME's reader profile page which showed all the possible desires and belongings of a typical reader of the magazine. This is useful for businesses due to they now if they should spend money and advertise in NME this shows the target audience and if the target audience of a produce will interest readers of this magazine. This is very useful for NME due to they now what they can realate there texts to their audience. The page also goes onto say the percentage of male and female readers, that NME readers are willing to spend on different items, really it is jsut a brief summary on what they enjoy buying and doing and the cross media they use. This shows NME in producing a good magazine due to they now know what the readers are interested in and how the fact that they can attract the readers with what they are interseted in.
With Kerrang! Magazine they have given a view of what they feel is there typical users personality, it says ; 'Individually minded, independent of thought and musically experienced, an audience defined by attitude, passion and loyalty.' This shows that Kerrang! Know the typical readers of the magazine and can realte the readers characteristics to the articles in their magazine. This also helps Kerrang! Due to it helps them interview bands that will attract the consumers, bands that have 'attitude, passion and loyalty' will attract the readers of the magazine. Bauer Media owns Kerrang! and Q Magazine, so they have done and audience description for Q magazine.
Q Magazine's audiece profile is 'Open minded experience seekers, the Q audience don’t define themselves by the music they listen to. Music is an important passion, but their love of music will never be to the detriment of their other passions, such as film, sport and comedy.' This suggets that Q Magazine doesn't just use music to sell there magazine, they use different reader's interests to attract them.
In the rolling stones magazine they have used demographic research which shows the typical income, gender, age and jobs of the readers this means they can use sterotypical information of they socio-economic class to help them with intersts of the readers. The fact the they have used quantitive data shows that the numeric percentage information is a general estimate of the readers income, age. They have added in information about the readers education due to it will help them writing the articles because it shows how literat they are and the chiose of words they should pick to help the audince understand and digest the information on offer
Adults
11,942 -100%
Men
6,948 - 58%
Women
4,994 - 42%
Age 18 to 24
3,638 - 30%
Age 18 to 34
7,201 - 60%
Median Age
31.5
Employed
8,620 - 72%
Attending College
2,011 - 17%
For my conclusion, i do believe that NME has had the best use of maket research, due to they use alot of different ways to understand and get to know the buyers of their magazine better. This also helps the businesses that are thinking of advertising the magazine because they can also see if there target audience is reached. There in-depth research means that they can interest reders on a topic, bands, news and what they spend their lesiure time on, so the readers can enjoy the information that relates and informs them about their interests.

Contents Page- Q

The contents page in Q magazine colours are the same as the front cover, mainly red black and white these are trademark colours for the business so differentiates it from competition.
